The municipality of Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel will be the host of the 7th Mutual Learning event and the accompanying Municipality Forum within the URBAN-WASTE project framework.
Two months after the previous gathering of the pilot cities in Nice for sharing the project’s solutions for food waste prevention and other measures to be implemented, as well as examples of good practices on the topic from other cities, the 11 pilots will meet again. During the next Mutual Learning event, organised by Fundo Regional para a Ciência e Tecnologia they will be this time looking at biowaste treatment options, suitable for urban areas and those which can serve as a solution for seasonal variations in the biowaste quantities due to tourism and bigger number of visitors and seasonal residents. This topic comes as a follow up of the topic mentioned previously which was covered in Nice. The host pilot city has made sure that the study visits the pilots will have will enrich the programme and show some solution already in place on the island.
The Municipality of Ponta Delgada will present two hotels, already advanced in terms of waste management adjusted to tourism. Marina Atlantico Hotel and Quinta Bom Despacho were picked as examples of good practices, with the latter having its own composting facility as a part of their Zero Waste Goal. The Municipality and the regional authority will also present how they manage waste collection in the countryside and nature reserves where a large number of tourist go, as well. Sete Cidades, the Azores’ number one tourist hotspot in the islands will be the destination for the participants’ study visit one afternoon. As the meeting will be covering composting and anaerobic digestion, the last visit organised will be to Agracor, a private company with its own biogas and vermicompost facilities.
A set of external speakers and guests will enrich the meeting with examples from elsewhere, reflection on certain policies and presenting potential replicable solutions. Therefore we invite interested cities and regions to get in touch with us in case they have a practice or a solution in place which they would like to share with the URBAN-WASTE pilot cities. The project will take care of the travel and accommodation costs.
