Last 28 September, the 2nd Community of Practices (CoP) event took place in Lisbon, organized by the municipality in partnership with Neya Hotel and Jerónimo Martins Company, with 39 different stakeholders attending, including hotels, NGOs, Lisbon Public Space and Waste Management Departments.
The workshop presented a brief summary of activities and results, followed by a group discussion to propose measures for improvement of the waste management. Different stakeholders elaborated proposals according to their environment. For example, for hotels, participants suggested the installation of different containers for selective collection in hotel rooms and the avoidance of disposable products, and implementing collection for organic waste.
As regards to public spaces and terminals for tourists’ arrival and departure, several measures were proposed, such as the installation of containers for plastic in highly public visible areas, the use of signs on the equipment in location for sorting and map indicating its location and the promotion of reusable cups during music and city festivals.
Instead, for the Airbnb platform, they suggested selective collection of organic waste, to provide tourists with instructions in different languages for waste separation, and to implement selective collection advertised with proper signs.
However, to make them work, those measures should be coordinated, including the provision of raising awareness for owners, cleaning companies and tourists, providing equipment on the streets, and keeping into consideration high point of entrance and exit of tourists in cities.
The last group of measures were related to local commerce, restaurants and supermarkets. The proposals varied from a deposit collection to favour reuse of disposable cups, to the development of a communication and awareness campaign on the reduction and separation of waste in supermarkets near tourist areas, to mandatory articles with obligations in regard to reuse and selective collection for service providers of cleaning and maintenance of spaces.
Lastly, all the groups referred the importance of having a better attractive signage and a “Good Practice Manual” for hotels and lodgements listed on Airbnb.
