On May 18th, in occasion of the “II Spring Symposium on Challenges in Tourism development in Gran Canaria”, Consulta Europa will present the results of a study produced in the context of the URBANWASTE project.
The study is focused on the influence of socio-cultural factors and gender on waste behaviour of tourists, and is based on data collected through surveys and focus groups with tourists and tourist operators in the 11 touristic destinations across Europe. The study is indeed the direct result of the activities carried out within the Mobilization of Stakeholders activities. Each pilot city/region of the URBAN-WASTE project disseminated the survey and run specific Focus groups with tourists between November 2017 and May 2017.
Consulta Europa, the University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Delft, partners of the project, analyzed the results of the surveys and integrated the data with the information collected during the focus groups. The main findings are outlined in the study titled “Influence of socio-cultural factors and gender on waste behaviour of tourists: Insights from 11 touristic destinations across Europe”.
In occasion of the Symposium organized by the TIDES, the Institute of Tourism and Economic Sustainable Development of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Consulta Europa will present the main results of the descriptive analysis that can be found in thestudy, with some insights on the current work of the project. As next step, by the end of June Consulta Europa, the University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Delft will submit a scientific paper to peer-review. It will include a more in-depth analysis of 3 different factors influencing waste production from the tourist sector: the attitude behaviour gap of tourists; the behavioural gap on holiday/ at home and the influence of socio-cultural factors and gender on waste behaviour.
