Syracuse held its 3rd Community of Practices event in Palazzo Vermexio on 12 December, hosting about 30 people from different backgrounds, such as local authorities, waste management authorities, associations of hand craft workers, tourist associations, schools and hotels representatives.
Throughout the event, Syracuse presented to participants the WasteApp, and discussed the previously selected measures for improving the waste management in the touristic areas of the city. Most importantly, the municipality of Syracuse decided to try and involve public transport services, including providers of electrical cars and bikes to reward good behaviours from tourists in exchange for free transport tickets.
Afterwards, implementation of selected measures was discussed, in particular identifying indicators to monitor the efficiency of those measures, the main operational steps and corresponding stakeholders involved for each of those actions.
For instance, as regards to sorting bins in public and touristic places, the participants highlighted relevant areas, possible constraints and the design of the bins; additionally, they identified as crucial for the monitoring, to count the numbers of bins, the quantity of waste collected, and the mapping of bins with their location; for the implementation, a pilot test, communication campaign and providing maps of bins in public spaces, have been considered as fundamental steps; to conclude, selected stakeholders for these measures were the superintendence, touristic guide associations, waste management sector and the tourist info points.
