The Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Regional Solid Waste Management Plan of Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, in Greece has been approved by the Ministry of Environment and Energy with the Common Ministerial Decision.
The updated Regional Solid Waste Management Plan includes quantitative and quality targets for each waste stream, as well as actions for their implementation, highlighting the decentralized waste management and the separate collection of recyclables and biowaste. The approved Waste Management Plan with the Common Ministerial Decision 49029/12.10.2016 is divided into two phases, the transitional period (2016-2017) and the integrated management period (2018-2020). It is important to mention that the Regional Solid Waste Management Plan introduces the development of Recycling Centers, as well as the collection at source of the biodegradable fraction of urban municipal solid waste. As far as the pilot city of URBAN-WASTE project, Kavala, is concerned, the updated plan includes the development of a central Waste Treatment Plant that will receive solid wastes from the prefecture of Kavala.
